چکیده
These notes are an expanded version of the lectures I gave at the 1991 ICTP Spring School on String Theory and Quantum Gravity. Here I have attempted to review, from my own personal viewpoint, some of the exciting developments in twodimensional string theory that have taken place over the last year and a half. Because of the multitude of new results, and since the field is still developing rapidly, a comprehensive review must await a later date. These notes are mainly devoted to the matrix model approach1 that has truly revolutionized the two-dimensional Euclidean quantum gravity. Recently this approach has led to the exact solution of quantum gravity coupled to conformal matter systems with c ≤ 1.2−6 These lectures are about the c = 1 model5,6 that is both the richest physically and among the most easily soluble. This model is defined by the sum over geometries

I review some of the recent progress in two-dimensional string theory, which is formulated as a sum over surfaces embedded in one dimension.

Path Integral Monte Carlo simulations have been performed for U(1) lattice gauge theory in (2+1) dimensions on anisotropic lattices. We extract the static quark potential, the string tension and the low-lying “glueball” spectrum. The Euclidean string tension and mass gap decrease exponentially at weak coupling in excellent agreement with the predictions of Polyakov and Göpfert and Mack, but the...

String solitons in AdS 5 contain information of N = 4 SUSY Yang-Mills theories on the boundary. Recent proposals for rotating string solitons reproduce the spectrum for anomalous dimensions of Wilson operators for the boundary theory. There are possible extensions of this duality for lower supersymmetric and even for non-supesymmetric Yang-Mills theories. We explicitly demonstrate that the supe...

We show how an effective field theory of long distance QCD, describing a dual superconductor, can be expressed as an effective string theory of superconducting vortices. We evaluate the semiclassical expansion of this effective string theory about a classical rotating string solution in any spacetime dimension D. We show that, after renormalization, the zero point energy of the string fluctuati...

It has recently been shown that the uniqueness theorem for stationary black holes cannot be extended to five dimensions. However, uniqueness is an important assumption of the string theory black hole entropy calculations. This paper justifies this assumption by proving a uniqueness theorem for supersymmetric black holes in five dimensions. Some remarks concerning general properties of non-super...
